With rapid urbanisation in a tropical climate like India , air-conditioning is not a luxury but a necessity . What we need to be talking is not just cooling, but also the quality of the air that we breathe Indoor . The Indoor air depends a lot on the outdoor air quality.

The dense smog that you see over Indian cities. It shows the deteriorating quality of air in Mumbai & Delhi .

Air conditioning, more commonly associated with keeping us cool during hot summer days, has a lesser-known yet equally vital role: controlling indoor air quality. For many, the importance of clean and healthy air is often overlooked, but considering we spend a significant portion of our lives indoors, understanding the impact of air conditioning on air quality is essential.

IAQ refers to the air quality within and around buildings and structures, primarily as it relates to the health and comfort of the building occupants. Factors affecting IAQ include:

  • Levels of pollutants (e.g., dust, pollen, mold spores, carbon and chemicals)
  • Humidity
  • Temperature

Poor IAQ can lead to various health issues, including respiratory problems, allergies, and other health conditions.

The Role of Air Conditioning in IAQ

  1. Filtration: One of the primary ways AC systems improve IAQ is through the use of filters. As air circulates through the system, filters capture and remove particulate contaminants like dust, pollen, and even certain microorganisms. Over time, advancements in technology have given rise to HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters that can trap particles as small as 0.3 microns, ensuring even cleaner indoor air.
  2. Humidity Control: High humidity levels can be a breeding ground for mold and mildew, which are known allergens. Air conditioning systems reduce moisture in the air, thereby controlling humidity and preventing mold growth. Some advanced AC units even come with built-in dehumidifiers to enhance this effect.
  3. Ventilation: Modern AC systems can introduce and distribute fresh outdoor air, diluting indoor air pollutants and improving overall IAQ. This process is vital, especially in tightly sealed buildings, where pollutant concentrations can be high.
  4. Eliminating VOCs: Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are chemicals that can evaporate into the air and potentially cause health problems. While air conditioners don’t directly eliminate VOCs, by maintaining a moderate temperature, they can reduce the rate at which these compounds off-gas from products inside the home.
  5. Consistent Temperature: By maintaining a consistent indoor temperature, air conditioners can prevent areas of damp and cold where microorganisms like mold and bacteria might thrive.
A dark city with unhealthy air and having to wear masks could become the norm if we choose to ignore Indoor Air Quality.

Tips for Maintaining Optimal IAQ with Air Conditioning

  • Regular Maintenance: Ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly. Dirty filters or malfunctioning parts can reduce the system’s efficiency and potentially introduce contaminants into your indoor air.
  • Use Quality Filters: Invest in good quality filters, such as HEPA filters, which can trap smaller particles and pollutants.
  • Adequate Ventilation: If your system doesn’t have a ventilation feature, consider supplementing it with other ventilation methods, like opening windows during cooler parts of the day or using exhaust fans.
  • Keep Your Home Clean: Regularly cleaning and dusting your home can reduce the number of pollutants your AC needs to filter out, helping it work more efficiently and prolonging its lifespan.
  • Monitor the Indoor Air Quality: Most of us assume the quality of air in our homes and offices are good , however it could be a rude shock if you monitor the air quality on a regular basis everyday . It helps you understand what is causing the air quality to deteriorate the type of dust or chemical . This information can help you in choosing the right filters , purification methods or the required ventilation.
